We all know that the kool kats are tops in jazz. I’m not sure what sort of music these fine felines are attempting to play with timpani, flute, tuba, cymbals and cello, but whatever it is, I bet it would be a great soundtrack for dogs playing poker.

I like this a lot because it’s usually dogs who get the gig in these types of animals-playing-instruments prints and paintings. I don’t know why they all look so dismayed though. Though when I was forced to take violin lessons in eighth grade because my father brought home a ratty violin that someone had brought to his junk shop but what I really wanted to be learning was piano I too look this perplexed.

Is this a print shellacked on wood or fake wood or cardboard made to look like wood?

I also love that all the cats have that long Modigliani look fused with those Keane eyes.

I have a book collecting the works of the Keanes – very strange stuff!

There is quite a lot of kitsch involving tubas and Sousaphones – nowhere near as many as frogs (probably the most common kitsch subject around the world) dogs, children, or rabbits – but I have found quite a few. This is one of only a very few Sousaphone-cat pieces!
