i know it’s impossible to believe but I never have been to Coney Island, even despite living in NYC for 8 years. I was always such a workaholic and never took the time. I can go anywhere where I drive a car but when I’m in NY it’s cabs and trains and I lose my enthusiasm. Looking at these photos now makes me want to hop on a plane.

The Freak Bar painting is FANTASTIC. Astroland needs no comment. I want that sign on top of my house. All the art everywhere is beyond great. And then there’s the hot dogs…. my favorite food in the world.

    Excellent documentation, Shirlie!!

I’ve never been to Coney Island and probably will never go there, but I am fascinated with this amusement park. In fact, I’ve never been to NYC. When I was a kid growing up, I dreamed of going to NYC. I was obsessed with it, but now I’m in my late 50’s and I realize I will probably never go there….and that’s okay….because I feel like NYC is even better in my dreams and fantasies then it would be in real life.

I’ve lived in both NYC and LA and am definitely partial to the latter. Not at all a fan of Manhattan lifestyle compared to good life in LA. But my big point is that late 50’s is SO not the age to resign oneself that it might be too late to do anything. That’s when you should really go for it. Not at all pushing to see NYC but definitely pushing to do anything and everything that’s interesting to you.

Michael, do it! Put it on your bucket list. Raised in Ohio I moved to NYC, smack in the middle of Manhattan from the time I was about 22 till about 42. Honestly, it’s an experience as great as seeing the Grand Canyon the first time. The energy is incredible. Really, there’s nothing to fear. Just don’t wear clean white sneakers. You’ll look like a tourist! You’re way to young to pass it up! I’ll cheer you on!

Beautiful!!!… We have a friend who will love to see these great images.. He loves/collects Coney Island.. He was born/raised in the shadow of the Coney Island Cyclone Roller Coaster.. We swear he could be real life Neil Simon character…Brooklyn, NY, all the guys, and his Sargent, called him “Coney” when he was a kid (stationed in the south) in the Army..smile
