When I was a Girl Scout this was my favorite piece of gear.  Only 2-1/2″ tall at full stature (1″ collapsed), I used to load this baby up with Faygo Red Pop and a teaspoon plop of Sealtest vanilla ice cream and start dipping in my Thin Mints. I loved the sound the cup made as I shuffled the thin layers of collapsible tin like a deck of cards or accordion.

Though this isn’t my actual cup, this one’s adult life has been dedicated to serving as an excellent horse hoof sound effect in my recording studio.

I also LOVED the SOUND this cup made as I shook it from it’s flat to fully realized liquid-holding state!!!! And oh… that unmistakable feeling when it truly ‘locked’ into it’s solid cup-ness… Only to have me collapse it yet again. I also loved that tin-y jiggle sound it made when it was collapsed with the cover on (as much as I loved the sound of Captain Kangaroo cutting colored construction paper with a scissors…). In the late 80’s – mid 90’s I carried a lime green plastic (non-Girl Scout)version in my makeup bag – seemed like a great idea to have it on hand ‘just in case’ (I guess that ‘Be Prepared’ thing stuck more than I thought…). I never did end up drinking anything out of it. But whenever I cleaned out the makeup bag in my purse, I felt the need to play with it a bit before putting it back.

P.S. I was a Sealtest Cherry Vanilla gal… It wasn’t until I was in my mid 20’s that I was introduced to the joys of vanilla ice cream plopped into all kinds of bubbly drinks like ginger ale (I still really love that).

P.S.S. A thin mint sounds SO good right now.

@Deli – Now that’s my kind of experience! Totally tactile, multi level enjoyment. I can relate to the sound of cutting construction paper too. I can hear it now, especially when happening to my favorite colors, Robin’s Nest Blue or Pink.

If you have any of your childhood treasures still lying around I hope you’ll submit them to The Allee Willis Museum Of Kitsch starting 9/14. http://www.awmok.com/index.html
