Allee Willis’ Crumbs O’ The Day – 3 Day Old Donut Crumbs with Allee & Charles

A couple days ago, I documented my Sunday drive with Charles Phoenix, noting that our very first stop was for an appetizer at Spudnuts, a donut establishment where the donuts are made out of potatoes. We weren’t sure how these were gonna taste but I can tell you that the big fat cakey one I had was literally one of the best I’ve ever tasted.

When Charles and I hit upon foodstuffs of this magnitude we oftentimes stick it in a box, videoing ourselves packing it up, and then open it in a year to see how much has changed. We were about to open a box of two dozen Yum Yums we laid to rest last New Year’s, 2010…

…but decided to let it go another year. We think that other than being harder than a rock, the donuts are going to look perfect but just be more dietarily appealing because, as you can see, all the grease  has been absorbed by the box. But that outcome will now not be revealed until 2012.

This last Sunday, our Spudnuts were so good that we both saved the last bites with intentions of also wrapping them up for a year to open in January, 2012. But we both forgot them under the front seat of Charles’ car and when we went out a couple nights ago we found that all they were of use for by then were to break your jaw. At the moment of discovery, we were right across the street from another historic Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank. So we raced out of the car and posed in front of the Boy himself in order to offer you the last look at our delicious, beloved Spudnuts.

If by any chance you have a Spudnut establishment in your neighborhood –  I have no idea if this is local to California or what –  I’d sure like to know if they’re as good in your neck of the donut as in ours. Happy chewing!

    I grew up on Krispy Kremes – which are a very light yeast glazed doughnut that literally melts in your mouth. They make other varieties but the original, to me, is the best. That being said, I have come to enjoy the Old-Fashioned at the local Dunkin Donuts. I do like a cake doughnut so this post got my attention.
    to the best of my knowledge, Spudnuts have not made it to my neck of the woods. But the concept of using potatoes for lots of things has…being from an area that touches the Appalachian mountains, there are a lot of Scotch- Irish influences…one being. potato candy.
    Are you familiar with it? It’s literally a chocolate dipped confection made out of potatoes. In the South, we tend to create some of the best, sweetest desserts out there and I’m thinking Spudnuts would do well to consider branching out to see if they could happily co-mingle with the Krispy Kremes diehards out there. We do love our sweets…

    Wow, never heard of potato candy… Is it sweet and is it always chocolate covered?

    Spudnuts taste different than Krisy Kremes. Now mind you, I’ve only had the one i had on Sunday. I think I need another donut run there before I go allll the way and say they’re the best. There isn’t a Spudnuts near my house though so it will demand another Sunday drive. But anything for a great donut!

    I’ve heard of potato candy but never had it. There’s something called a “Idaho Spud Bar” that is a take on it (http://www.idahospud.com/candy-idaho-spud-bar.php) but unfortunately contains no potatoes.

    As for Spudnuts, there used to be a lot more of their shops but there’s only about 45 left: http://spudnutshop.com/

    I just saw a comment you left on a Time Magazine article about Linda Spight’s contract (principal of Mumford) not being renewed. I didn’t know you went to Mumford. This is somewhat off the wall, but I am doing research on an article focusing on math education. I don’t know what your experience was in math (i.e., good or bad), but I do recall that my experience at Mumford was very good because of the teachers there. I’d like to explore what you remember about your math experiences there, if you remember them. (Good or bad; if you had Miss Schnell, they were certainly bad, I’m sorry to say!)

    I’m sure you can access my email since I had to leave it in order to write this comment. I graduated Mumford in 67, so we’re in the same era. I agree with you that it was a good school and that Linda Spight should not have been fired.

    OMG Allee you make me laugh! To pack up food to unwrap in years is a killer to me. I can’t let food last a day without digging back into it until it’s gone!
