Love Bank

I got this watermelon slice-shaped bank on eBay many years ago in a “lot” of various papier mache banks. It is 8″ long, a little over 4″ tall, and was made in 1969. I love the swirly sunglasses and the hat and the fact that the rainbow is yellow, green, blue, and white (and becomes white, yellow, blue, and white on the back!)

Beautiful and so supremely late 1960s! The fact that it was made by ‘pride’ in ’69 is even better. My favorite thing is how absolutely nothing in the graphic has anything at all to do with a watermelon. And such a weird shape for a bank where you’d hope to get in as much money as you could.

I love this! It reminds me of the kind of stuff that used to be for sale at a boutique in my neighborhood when I was a kid in the suburbs of Chicago (late 60’s). It was called THAT PAPER PLACE and had a lot of flower-power, hippy and paper mache items like this.

I lovedstore names like THAT PAPER PLACE. Another great thing about the 60s is that it started the trend of those kind of store names that got even bigger and cheesier in the 70’s and 80s’
