Last night at the premiere of Season 3 of Better Things, Pamela Adlon’s BRILLIANT show on FX that she writes, directs and stars in and has been Emmy-nominated twice for as Best Actress In A Comedy. We’ve been incredible friends for 35 years, even before she started schlepping paint cans behind me as my art assistant in the late 80’s. Also here Alysia Reiner, who was one of the only cast members of Orange Is the New Black who wasn’t at the opening of my musical, The Color Purple Musical, when it reopened on Broadway in 2015, featuring my fave Danielle Brooks a.k.a. Tastee on OITNB starring as Sofia. I really wanted to meet Alysia as her portrayal of Assistant Warden Natalie “Fig” Figueroa was insanity inspired. So I was thrilled when I got on the plane back to LA a few days later and there she was seated directly in front of me. We became friends and I’m so happy I have an in with the warden now! Alysia also plays Sunny on Better Things. Me and the lovely Prudence Fenton fill out the photo. I can’t even tell you how UNBELIEVABLE season 3 of Better Things is. Reviews have been staggering. It starts tomorrow night, Thursday, so set your devices now!
Just spent 3 fabulous days with these 20 brilliant female songwriters, producers and engineers who participated in Universal Music Publishing Group‘s She Is The Music songwriting camp held here at Willis Wonderland. We broke off into 3 different groups each day, all writing for the incredible Lauren Jauregui, who was also in attendance and writing away with us. She has a killer voice, is way wise beyond her 22 years, and was amazingly fun to work with. Her exceptional talent was exceeded only by the blue of her teeth from a Ring Pop that lived on the whole way through. This was creativity in its greatest and rawest form for me. An incredible mix of talent, intensity, camaraderie, and a whole lot of laughing and fun. The ladies have arrived! #SheIsTheMusic

Girls night with (L-R) Prudence Fenton, Pamela Adlon, Pam’s mom Marina, me, and Diva Zappa. I’ve known two of these gals since they were teenagers – Pam, now a brilliant two-time Emmy Best Actress in a Comedy nominee, not to mention my favorite animated voice of all time, Bobby Hill on King Of The Hill, was 17 when she was my art assistant when I was doing a ton of music videos in the late 80’s. And Diva was the baby Zappa when I camped out at the Zappa abode for many a year starting in the 90’s on. Lots of cheese consumed.
The lovely Prudence Fenton and I sharing the holidays with two of our favorite men, Tom Trujillo and Dima Gornovskyi at our favorite Old School steakhouse, The Smoke House Restaurant. Better yet it was their over-stuffed, fly-me-to-the-moon-and-back Sunday buffets, a gargantuan room of endless fooooodstuffs, not one of those quaint salad bars/carving station/omelet bar affairs but every possible food category and ethnicity in between. WE are revving up for a big Valentine’s Day night there too. The best decorated hearts place in LA.
Me and TIMOTHY LEARY at my birthday party in 1987. Tim was a great friend and was an excellent role model for life, never stopping being exciting no matter what age you are. I have studied the master well!! #williswonderland#alleeparty #psychdelic #icon #timothyleary #timleary #fbf #flashbackfriday
This is one of my fave photos of all time, not just because I’m singing with JONI MITCHELL at my birthday pajama party in the early 90’s but because we’re being accompanied by the infamous and wonderful DEL RUBIO TRIPLETS, who I’m happily credited with discovering. If you don’t know them, get googling as they sit high atop the Kitsch Sundae that is my life. To say the hi and lo ends of the musical scale are represented in this photo doesn’t begin to describe the musical mayhem we created that night. #TBT
This was a couple weekends ago at Stephanie Miller Show’s hysterical Sexy Liberal show right before the election. Thrilling to see such an illustrious lineup of politicos and comedians there including Adam Schiff,Rep. Ted Lieu, Margaret Cho, Rob Reiner, Martin Sheen and more. Excellent evening (and results)! Me on Stephanie’s podcast: https://
I was totally exhausted after 36 hours of birthday festivities over the weekend but had enough left in me for one final bday blow with Beatie Wolfe who, along with Chef Nick, treated me and the lovely Prudence Fenton to a traditional English tea, much needed after the voluminous amounts of birthday cake and candy consumed in the previous 36.
Celebrated part of my birthday at the opening of The Color Purple Musical at the Greenway Court Theatre in LA Saturday night. Show was great but my favorite part was when the cast serenaded me with Happy Birthday. Thank you Celie, Shug, Sofia, Harpo, Mister, Church Ladies and the whole TCP community! It was a great place to be as another year gets ripped off the calendar. Quick songwriter alert: I was thrilled to have Mike Stoller, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, at the show and staying for cake (bottom right). (“Stand By Me, ”Hound Dog,” “On Broadway,” “Spanish Harlem,” and a zilllllllion more.)
